  • Hemodialysis (HD) is the most common method used to treat end stage kidney failure. It is a process of removing waste products and excess fluid from blood using an artificial kidney (dialyzer) and dialysis machine.
  • Patient needs dialysis, when kidney function reduces by 85 to 90% (endstage kidney disease -ESKD), kidneys no longer remove enough wastes and fluid from the body and that leads to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fatigue, swelling and breathlessness.
  • Dialysis helps the body by purification of blood by removal of waste products such as creatinine, urea, removal of excess fluid in the body, correction of chemicals such as sodium, potassium and bicarbonate.
  • Most hemodialysis is performed at dialysis centers, under the care of doctors, nurses and dialysis technicians.
  • Hemodialysis is carried out usually three times per week and each session lasts for about four (4) hours.
  • The three most common types of vascular access for hemodialysis are central venous catheters, native arteriovenous (AV) fistulas and synthetic grafts.
  • Hemodialysis is safe, less stressful and comfortable for patients. Hemodialysis is a faster and more efficient dialysis modality.
  • Regular dialysis is essential for long term sound health.
